5 Popular Ski Tours in Hemsedal

Hemsedal Ski Tours

  1. 1609

1609 offers a great safe escape, into soft fresh snow, protected by the wind. For its namesake, this peak is located 1609 meters above sea level, and offers 650 vertical meters of fun. The trip begins walking through a lightly populated birch forest. After 200 meters of walking through the forest, the trail clears into the river creek valley. The creek valley offers protection from the wind, and keeps the snow soft and fresh. Because of the topography of this trip, it allows for a long touring season.

After making your way out of the creek valley, there is a small plateau, before making it up to the summit at 1609 moh.

Down: You can take the same route as you went up. The terrain is playful, safe, and wind-protected. You can almost make it back to the car with minimal effort. However for Splitboarders, they may need to unmount their board and walk.

  1. Nibbi

Nibbi is the mountain where you can both start and end the ski season in Hemsedal. Most seasons, there is enough snow to start skiing by November, and it can last all the way until May. This is because there is a recess in the terrain lies across the main wind direction and collects snow early, and preserves it for the season. Down in the chute, the snow is shielded from the wind, which makes for a fun ride down.

In the spring, you can enjoy that this is a south-facing trip, as it is protected by the late spring sun, which both prevents you from overheating, but also preserves the snow. You can enjoy all 800 vertical meters, as you can ski from the summit and all the way down to the car, which makes this trip also suitable for splitboarders.

Even though Nibbi is popular trip, there is a lot of room for everyone to have a fresh line. Just remember to stack your tracks. The snow cover on Nibbi will often be thinner on the ridges around the ridge because here the wind catches and carries away the snow. Down in the ridge the snow cover will be thicker because here the wind will turn away. This makes for a great opportunity to practice snow awareness, to see if you can spot the differences.

UP: From the Lykkjastølen, a waterfall is seen about a hundred meters in the mountainside. The easiest way is to walk on the west side of this one. Step upwards after the waterfall and then follow in or to the right of the natural drainage formation. Follow this all the way up to the summit of 1741 meters. DOWN: The easiest descent follows the same route as the ascent.

DOWN: The easiest downhill rims down the same route as the ascent

  1. Skogshorn

Skogshorn is right next to Nibbi, however, it is approached from the North East instead of the South. Skogshorn is also a fairly easy trip.

you can find parking at Trafta, and from the parking lot, head north / north-west, staying on the westside of Hynda.

The entire route to the 1728 meter summit is above the treeline, which leads to fantastic views on a clear day. However, it should be noted that on the backside, the snow is usually quite wind blown, and can make for a rougher day of skinning / skiing.

This trip can be combined with Skarvanfjell or Nibbi, and made better if you have some friends to pick you up on the other side.

  1. Slettind

Slettind is an easy and easily accessible hike in the high mountain on Hemsedalsfjellet. This is a short and sweet ski tour, ideal of beginners.
